The win streak ended tonight for the Pilots, losing 8-3 to the Wilson Tobs. Trey Morgan (VMI) led the Pilots in hits tonight, going 3-4 from the nine-slot with an RBI double.
Play was paused in the seventh inning due to lightning strikes in the area, but was able to continue after an hour.
Bats stayed hot for the Pilots tonight, recording twelve hits on the night, but the runs didn’t come with it. Mistakes riddled the Pilots throughout the eighth, recording three walks, three wild pitches, one hit-by-pitch, and a balk.
Will Gross (Old Dominion) had a shaky start giving up three runs in two innings pitched.
The bullpen did a great job picking him up, with Jake Clemente (Florida) and Cam Nuckols (Virginia Commonwealth) having clean innings out of the bullpen.
The Tobs kicked off the scoring in the second inning, scoring three runs on only one hit. An error, double, and a sacrifice fly put these runs across.
A bases-loaded walk by Mason Dunaway (James Madison) in the fifth got the Pilots on the board.
However, this run was quickly nullified by a solo shot by the Tobs in the bottom half of the inning.
After an hour-long rain delay, the Pilots inched closer, scoring a run on a throwing error by the Tobs’ catcher.
Trey Morgan doubled in the top of the eighth, scoring Aaron Manias and cutting the lead to one.
The eighth inning ended up being the beginning of the end for the Pilots. The Tobs got this run back and more in the bottom half, scoring four runs. An RBI single started things, and then the wheels came off for the Pilots. A balk and a wild pitch scored two more runs, and the Tobs started to run away with it.
The Pilots now enter a three-day break, with their next game at home on July 12th against the Tri-City Chili Peppers.
