The Pilots go on their first road trip today as they face the Tri-City Chili Peppers at 5:45 today. In their previous meeting, both teams had stellar pitching, with the first run of the game coming in the top of the 7th. The Pilots’ bats came alive last night against the Marlins, but it didn’t translate to runs. Coach Hank Morgan explained why.

“A lot of our hits came with two outs and empty bases,” Coach Morgan said. “We even had an inning or two where we had multiple hits with two outs. Need to get on base earlier in the inning.”

Here’s how the Pilots will take the field.

1: CF Trey Morgan (VMI)

2: 3B Mason Dunaway (JMU)

3: LF Ryan Dooley (JMU)

4: 1B Aaron Manias (Howard)

5:SS Eduardo Acosta (Lubbock Christian)

6: RF Hunter Cole (Randolph Macon)

7: 2B Marc Cisco (Queens College)

8: C Barham White (LSU-Eunice)

9: Elijah Dickerson (Towson)

P: Nate Varnier (William Peace)

Nate Varnier is a junior LHP from William Peace University who is returning for his second season with the Pilots. In 2022, Varnier’s impressive season landed him a spot on the CPL East All-Star roster. Varnier recorded an impressive 3-1 record and got a save in his only opportunity. Coach Morgan talked about his expectations with Varnier.

“I expect him to compete and mix speeds,” Coach Morgan says.

Coach Morgan also talked about the excitement that comes with a road trip.

“We’re just excited for another opportunity to compete,” Coach Morgan said. “Another chance to get a look at more of our roster; first experience on the road with our guys.”
