Michael Caldon (Felician University) had a short start tonight, only pitching two innings. In those two innings, he gave up one earned run on two hits, striking out four.
After Caldon exited, it was a group effort from the Pilots’ pitching staff, with seven other pitchers throwing.
Two RBI hits kicked off the game for the Mustangs, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
The first four batters reached base for the Pilots in the bottom of the second inning, and all of them came around to score. Trey Morgan (VMI) singled with the bases loaded to bring in the Pilots’ first run of the game. Hunter Cole (Randolph Macon) cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to center, with one extra run scoring on an error on the throw home. After the second inning, the Pilots led 4-2.
Cole Stanford (Lenoir Rhyne) recorded his second caught stealing of the night in the third inning.
Stanford did numbers at the plate in the fourth inning, hitting a two-run shot into the visitor’s bullpen, putting the Pilots up 6-2.
In the seventh, Bryce Stober (Lenoir Rhyne) got a pinch-hit opportunity and did the most with it, doubling to left-center field on the first pitch of his at-bat.
Chris Martinez (Univ. of Science and Art) walked in a run in the bottom of the seventh.
An RBI single in the eighth scored the Mustangs’ first run since the first inning, cutting the Pilots’ lead to 7-3.
Bryce Stober hit an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the eighth, making the lead 8-3.
Martinsville added four more in the top of the ninth, but the Pilots hung on, striking out the last batter and taking an 8-7 victory in their final game. They officially end the season with a 24-24 record.
