Pilots Win Regular Season Home Finale

HAMPTON, Va. – The Peninsula Pilots wrapped up their home slate with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Edenton Steamers at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

The win gave the Pilots a 9-7 series win against the Steamers and allowed the team to finish over .500 at home with a 14-13 record.

Peninsula (32-22, 16-10) mounted a two-out rally in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. Back-to-back singles by Drew Delsignore (Mercyhurst) and Logan Brown (Southern Indiana) set up Sam Grigg’s (Southern Indiana) two-run double off the left-field wall. Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) immediately followed with a single through the right side for a 3-0 lead.

The Pilots added a run in the fourth inning when the Steamers dropped a fly ball in the outfield which allowed Wrighte to score all the way from first base to extend the lead to 4-0.

Edenton (29-25, 12-14) found the scoreboard in the fifth when Luis Martinez (Cal State – San Bernardino) brought in a run on a ground out.

Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana) drilled a home run to left-center to put the Pilots ahead 5-1. The home run is his third in as many games.

Two more runs came across in the eighth to provide the Pilots a cushion. Back-to-back singles by Delsignore and Brown started the inning. After a double steal moved them both into scoring position, Delsignore scored on a wild pitch. Griggs followed with a single up the middle to push the lead to 7-1.

Ryan Fox (VCU) improved to 4-1 on the season with five solid innings on the mound. The right-hander gave up one run and struck out three. Paul Hall Jr. (Virginia Tech) pitched a scoreless sixth inning before Kyle Hinton (Delaware) took over and tossed two scoreless innings. Nathan Eaton (VMI) pitched a perfect ninth inning to close it out.

The Pilots wrap up their regular season with a visit to Morehead City on Monday night to face the Marlins at Big Rock Stadium. Peninsula will then play on Tuesday in the first round of the CPL Petitt Cup Playoffs.
