It was an emotional site at War Memorial Stadium as the Peninsula Pilots held its annual "Kevin Eadie Night." Friday night's event was a tribute to the late Pilots Batboy, as he served honorably for seven years. As players, coaches, staff and fans gathered their emotions, a ball game was to be played on the diamond as the Pilots welcomed the Edenton Steamers in a battle between the two North Division foes.
The two teams would go scoreless through six as Edenton would be the first to tally runs, scoring two in the seventh. Peninsula would bounce back in the same inning as Mike Mergenthaler (Richmond) would send an Adam Miller (Angelo State) pitch over the right-field wall for his first home run of the year. Mergenthaler's solo shot would cut the Steamers lead to just one as Miller would then be replaced by Coty Saranthus (Delta State). Saranthus would then force Adam McConnell (Richmond) to groundout for the third out of the inning.
Edenton would jump back to a two run lead in the eighth as A.J. Rusbarsky (Seton Hall) would hit a RBI single up the middle off Adam Wisniewski (Old Dominion).
Peninsula would attempt a ninth inning rally as Matt Rice (Western Kentucky) would hit a lead-off double to left. Saranthus would give up another hit to Mergenthaler as he would take a pitch to left for a single, allowing pinch-runner John Lynch (Norfolk State) to reach third. Lynch would then score the Pilots second run as Kevin McKague (Army) would hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Peninsula would then fail to score the tying run, as Saranthus would get David Coleman (Virginia) to ground out into a game-ending double play to give the Steamers their 12th win in the second half, improving their overall record to 30-22.
Kevin MacLachlan (Villanova) would take the loss for the Pilots, his fourth as starting pitcher Casey Webber (Western Michigan) would take the win. Edenton held the advantage offensively as they out hit the Pilots 10-9.
The loss snaps a four game winning streak as Peninsula receives its ninth loss in the second half as they stand alone in second place. Peninsula turns around to play the Steamers in Edenton the next day before wrapping up its regular-season home games at War Memorial Stadium against Petersburg. |
