Monday night at War Memorial Stadium the Pilots were back in action against third place Edenton as the heat for post-season action heats up around the Coastal Plain League's North Division.. The meeting between the two rivals would be an eleven inning thriller as the Pilots would eventually come through in the 11th to win 4-3, their third in a row.
The Pilots would be the first to tally runs, scoring two in the second with two outs as starting pitcher Jharel Cotton (Miami Dade C.C.) would keep the Edenton bats silent until the fourth, scoring a run to cut the Peninsula lead to just one.
Trailing 2-1, Edenton would then force extras, as A.J. Rusbarsky's double to left would score Justin Roland from first in the eighth. That would be Cotton's last appearance on the mound as he would go 7 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits while turning away seven.
Peninsula would threaten in the 10th as David Coleman (Virginia) would hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop A.J. Rusbarsky but would reach base on a throwing error by, allowing Will Lamb (Clemson) to reach third. Coty Saranthus would then get Chas Crane and Matt Rice to strikeout to end the inning.
Both team's would receive a stellar pitching performance as Edenton would use the arms of Saranthus for four innings and Mark Montgomery would come in late for the Steamers. Montgomery would replace Saranthus in the 11th inning but would come away with the loss, his second of the year.
Edenton would return in the 11th with a threat of its own as relief pitcher Adam Wisniewski (Old Dominion) would have runners on the corners with no outs after a failed dive attempt by second baseman Ivan Hartle (Western Kentucky). After a line-drive to Hartle, Sean McIntyre would come through for the Steamers-sending a pitch to left to take the lead.
The Pilots would bounce back giving up a run by scoring two of its own in the same inning. Logan Robbins (Western Kentucky) would connect for a hit that chopped over the third baseman's glove for a one out single. Mike Mergenthaler (Richmond) would follow the single with a RBI ground-rule double to right to tie the ball game.
With Mergenthaler on second Ivan Hartle would knock in the walk-off single as he would take a Mark Montgomery pitch back up the middle as he would get his second hit of the night to claim the win for the Pilots.
Earning the win tonight, Wisniewski would allow one earned run on two hits while striking out two. His two inning-outting would be enough to claim his third win of the year, imroving his record to 3-0 for the season.
The win is Peninsula's third in a row and 15th in the second half, improving its record to 15-8 (28-23 overall). The Pilots and the Steamers face each other again on Wednesday at Edenton before the Pilots travel back to War Memorial Stadium to take on Petersburg at 7 on Thursday. |
