Farmer Named CPL Player of the week

(Coastal Plain League)

The Coastal Plain League announced Thursday that DeMontez Jones of Columbia was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while Fayetteville’s Ryan Prickett and Peninsula’s Buck Farmer were named Rawlings Co-Pitchers of the Week for week seven of action (July 12-18)

Jones, a freshman from Georgia Southern, played in four games on the week for the Blowfish and finished with a .700 average. Of his seven hits, one was good for a double and another for a home run. Jones scored six runs and drove in another five, while tallying 11 total bases with a 1.100 slugging percentage, .786 on-base percentage, and four walks. Furthermore, he tacked on a pair of stolen bases.

On the mound, the 5-11, 175-pound Prickett pitched a complete game shutout of rival Florence on July 14 in his only appearance for the SwampDogs on the week. In nine innings of work, the sophomore lefty from Southeast Missouri scattered five hits and walked two, while striking out five to earn a perfect 0.00 ERA and 1-0 record.

Meanwhile, Farmer, a freshman from Georgia Tech, also threw a complete game shutout on July 14 for the Pilots coming against Edenton. The 6-4, 220-pound right-hander went nine innings, surrendering just three hits. He walked two, struck out six and held opposing batters to a meager .097 average to get the win and finish with a 0.00 ERA.

The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 14th season, the Coastal Plain League features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 800 alumni drafted and 36 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
