The Wilson Tobs made it six in a row with a hard fought 6-5 victory over the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday night at Historic Fleming Stadium. The Tobs wrapped up their regular season slate with the Pilots after taking their 10th win in the 12 meetings.
The Tobs (13-6, 31-16) survived a furious ninth inning charge by the Pilots (12-7, 25-22) to move a game up in first place of the CPL North Division with just nine contests left in the regular season.
Brennan Dobbins (4-2) earned the win by holding Peninsula to two runs on two hits in five innings. The right hander from the University of Central Florida struggled with his command at times, walking four hitters to two strikeouts. Matt Hamann pitched to one batter in the ninth to record his sixth save.
Buck Farmer (3-3) was stuck with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits through five innings.
As has been the case much of the season when Peninsula and Wilson meet on the diamond, the ninth was filled with plenty of drama. The Pilots’ rally began with two outs in the inning with Wilson up 6-2.
Reliever Jeff Brown got Josh Wright to pop a little flare into shallow center field. However, the Tobs were unable to corral the ball, and it dropped safely for a single. After a walk to Jimmy Rider, Ivan Hartle singled home Wright to make it 6-3. Will Lamb drew a walk to load the bases as things snowballed on the Tobs.
John Lynch rolled a sharp grounder towards third baseman Nick Aranas, but the ball scooted by him and a diving Zac Mitchell into left field. Peninsula plated two runs to make it 6-5.
With the tying run 90 feet from home, head coach Jeff Steele went to the Tobs’ closer, and Matt Hamann delivered by striking out the dangerous Chas Crane to end the game.
Despite the close finish, Wilson led throughout the contest by as many as four runs. They built a 6-2 advantage thanks to Mitchell in the sixth. With runners at second and third and one out, the shortstop from Belmont University hit a bloop single to left over a drawn-in infield to plate the runs Wilson would need. Mitchell finished the night by going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Trailing 4-0, the Pilots struck for their first runs in the fourth inning. After Dobbins issued a pair of walks to start the frame, Matt Rice smoked a double to the wall in right field to bring both runners home.
Wilson built the early advantage thanks to two runs in the first inning off a wild pitch and a groundout. Mitchell’s run-scoring single in the second and a base hit to bring one home by Dan Capeless in the third round helped the Tobs amass the 4-0 margin.
