In dramatic fashion the Pilots would pull out a ninth inning bases-loaded scenario for designated-hitter Kes Carter (Western Kentucky) to knock in lead-off batter David Coleman (Virginia) for a 6-5 victory over the Florence Redwolves at War Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
The last inning nail biter would come after a small, but critical attack by the Redwolves offense in the eighth, as they would score the tying run to make it five a piece. With two outs and bases loaded, Florence would take advantage of a mental error that allowed Ethan Santora to cross home plate.
Florence would threaten once again in the ninth as Coby Cowgill (VMI) would come in the top of the ninth for the Pilots. After giving up a lead-off single, and two intentional walks, Cowgill would have bases juiced with two outs. He would then get Ryan Durrence to swing for strike three to head into the bottom of the inning. Cowgill's one inning would be enough to earn him the win, his fourth.
Patrick Dolan would be on the opposite side of the spectrum, receiving his second loss. Dolan would come in the eighth but would have a pitcher's nightmare in the ninth. After hitting lead-off batter Coleman, and walking Chas Crane (Winthrop), he would then commit the game's biggest error. Batter, Matt Rice (Western Kentucky) would lay a bunt down the third baseline, as the charging Florence pitcher would fail at a bare-handed attempt that loaded the bases with no outs. Carter would then capitalize on the opportunity, driving a Dolan pitch to right field as right fielder John Frost would be unable to come up with the diving play. Carter's walk-off single would be his third hit of the night and his second RBI.
Both teams would use the arm's of four pitchers to go the distance while Peninsula would out-hit the Redwolves 11-10. On an upside for Florence, catcher Ronnie Freeman would be the nucleus of the Florence offense, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI; both hits would come from home runs in the fourth and the sixth, giving Florence a one-run lead.
Peninsula's win streak extends to six games as Saturday night's win is the teams 11th in the second half. With a 11-6 record, the Pilots are still tied for first in the North Division with Wilson as they defeated Petersburg 10-3 Saturday night. With the All-Star game just three days away, the Pilots do not return to action until Wednesday July 21 traveling to Wilson. The Pilots return home to War Memorial Stadium Saturday July 24 against the Outer Banks Daredevils.
