Pilots Drop Regular Season Finale

PETERSBURG, Va. – The Peninsula Pilots had a 10-game win streak snapped as they fell 5-4 in the regular season finale to the Petersburg Generals at the Petersburg Sports Complex on Monday night.

The Pilots, who won both the first and second halves of the season, will host the Morehead City Marlins in the first round of the CPL Petitt Cup Playoffs on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium. Gates open at 5:30 and the first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. All general admission tickets are $5.

Peninsula owns a 3-1 record in the season series against the Marlins. The two teams split a doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium on June 20 before the Pilots took both games in the second half.

Petersburg scored first as Sammy Miller (Longwood) led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Robert Cox’s (Kutztown) double.

The Pilots responded with three runs in the second inning to take the lead. Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) hit a one-out single and moved to second on Josh Close’s (Liberty) walk. After a groundout moved the runners into scoring position, Nick Walker (Old Dominion) gave the Pilots the lead with a two-run single and put himself into scoring position on the throw. The aggressive base running proved beneficial as a single by Will Shepherd (Liberty) allowed Walker to score to put the Pilots ahead 3-1.

The Generals cut the Pilots’ lead to one with a RBI single by Chad Doyle (Sacred Heart) in the fourth inning.

Peninsula responded with a run in the fifth inning to push the lead back to two. Darian Carpenter (VCU) reached on a lead-off walk. After stealing second and moving to third on a groundout, Guardascione scored Carpenter with a single to right field.

Petersburg cut the Pilots lead to one with a run in the sixth inning when an error allowed Calvin Scott (Delaware) to score. The Generals took the lead with two runs in the seventh with a RBI single by Cox and a sacrifice fly by Tray Roberts (Armstrong State).

With the playoffs looming, head coach Hank Morgan elected to rest arms and have everyone available to pitch Wednesday night. Alex Mauricio (Norfolk State) got the start and pitched two solid innings, giving up a run and striking out one. Paul Hall Jr. (Virginia Tech) followed with two innings of one-run ball. Colt Harlow (James Madison) pitched a scoreless inning before giving way to Joel Taylor (Southeast Missouri State), Welby Malczewski (Auburn), and Michael Parmentier (Norfolk State), who all pitched an inning to close out the game.

The Pilots host the Morehead City Marlins for a first round play Petitt Cup playoff game on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at War Memorial Stadium.
