Late Rally Falls Short

EDENTON, N.C. – The Edenton Steamers held off a late Peninsula Pilots rally to capture a 7-4 win at Historic Hicks Field on Monday night.

Edenton jumped out to a six-run lead when the offense exploded in the third inning. JJ Carr (Colorado Mesa) hit a lead-off double and came around to score on Justin Battley’s (Illinois-Springfield) two-run home run. Three straight singles led to another run. A couple more runs came around to score on a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded to go ahead 5-0. Later in the inning, a run scored on a rundown to put the Steamers ahead 6-0.

The Steamers pushed their lead to seven with a run on an error in the fifth.

Peninsula finally got on the board with a two-run home run by Drew Delsignore (Mercyhurst) in the sixth inning.

The Pilots mounted a rally in the ninth inning to put pressure on the Steamers. Conor Davis (Auburn) reached on a lead-off single and three straight walks to Nathan Eaton (VMI), Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary), and Jonathan Embry (Liberty) plated a run. Sam Griggs (Southern Indiana) closed the gap to three with a sacrifice fly but the Pilots could not get any closer as a double play ended the game.

John Arel (Maine) picked up the win for the Steamers after going 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball and striking out 10 on the night. Kyle Hinton (Delaware) took the loss for the Pilots. The Pilots bullpen was masterful in keeping the team in the game. Vinnie Tarantola (Liberty) got the Pilots out of the third inning by retiring two Steamers before Ryan Fox (VCU) tossed 3 1/3 innings and struck out four. Paul Hall Jr. (Virginia Tech) retired two Steamers and Patrick Monteverde (Virginia Wesleyan) struck out the side in the eighth inning.

The Pilots face Edenton again on the road Tuesday before returning home to War Memorial Stadium for games Wednesday and Thursday nights.
