HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – The Peninsula Pilots continued their winning ways with a 13-1 rout over the Holly Springs Salamanders on Wednesday night.
Peninsula immediately jumped out to an early with five runs in the first inning. Scott Dubrule (Jacksonville) led off with a single to center field. Two batters later, Jonathan Embry (Liberty) put the Pilots ahead 2-0 with a two-run home run to right field. Three errors by the Salamanders allowed two more runners to score before an infield single by Connor Stephens (Jacksonville) brought in the fifth run of the inning.
Holly Springs scored a run in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to four.
The Pilots increased their lead with four more runs in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Embry and Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana) started the rally. After an error loaded the bases, Conor Davis (Auburn) brought in a run with a single. Stephens continued his successful night with a two-run single to score McNamara and Spencer Horwitz (Radford). Nathan Eaton (VMI) brought home the ninth run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
After a couple scoreless innings, Peninsula reached the double-digit mark with three runs in the sixth inning. Eaton drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sam Griggs (Southern Indiana) delivered a two-run home run to push the Pilots into double digits for only the seventh time of the season. A walk to McNamara, followed by a single by Horwitz set up another run on a ball hit by Drew Delsignore (Merychurst).
A RBI double in the ninth capped the scoring for the Pilots.
Collin Liberatore (Pittsburgh) anchored the strong performance on the mound with three scoreless innings to claim the victory.
The Pilots will return home on Thursday night to face Edenton in a rematch of Monday’s thriller in which Delsignore delivered the walk-off two-run home run to take a 7-5 victory.
